About
I’m Giuseppe Maccario, an Italian software developer based in Amsterdam. I’ve been building software professionally since 2005, and today I’m building a product of my own.
Where it started
My first job was in Ivrea and Turin, in 2005, writing PHP at Ribes Informatica: websites and tools for Vodafone’s technical department, and data extraction and reporting for alternative-energy plants.
In 2008 I moved to C# and SQL Server at Quintetto, working on a multi-channel platform and leading the development of Windows services for an Advanced Traffic Management System, which talked to UMTS modems through AT commands. From 2010, at Netics, I was the lead developer of a custom web-based ERP built on Symfony.
Sports platforms for the whole world
From 2012 to 2015 I worked at deltatre in Turin, building sports web platforms in C#, ASP.NET MVC, SQL Server and MongoDB, in Scrum teams.
During the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games I worked on London2012.com: live scoreboards with real-time results, medal tables, and team and athlete pages. For the 2014 World Cup in Brazil I was part of the FIFA.com support team. I also worked on the Baku 2015 European Games, the CBC mobile and tablet app for the 2015 Pan Am Games and Ziggo Sport, and in the Web API team, building RESTful APIs for several clients’ apps.
In 2016 I taught PHP and Python at Delpho in Turin. Several of my students went on to work on PHP projects professionally.
Amsterdam
I moved to Amsterdam in 2017. At Spotzer Media Group, where WordPress was one of the main platforms for customers’ websites, I was part of the WordPress team and grew from web developer to senior: integrations with AWS, Google and payment gateways, custom plugins, automation in the company’s WordPress product suite, standards for new development, and mentoring junior developers. It’s the experience behind my own WordPress plugins. At 9YARDS I synchronised data between customers’ Magento shops and their suppliers’ systems, and migrated a project from Silex to Symfony 5.
From 2020 to 2023, at Azerion, I worked on the Laravel backend of Governor of Poker 3 and Monopoly Poker. I automated support processes for a game with around 18 million players, and led the migration of a legacy project from Silex to Laravel.
At CLIQ Digital I built microservices with PHP 8.3 and Symfony 7, using domain-driven design, hexagonal and clean architecture, CQRS and AWS SQS, on Kubernetes. I also mentored junior developers and took part in hiring, reviewing CVs and technical tests.
At Art of Fiber I worked full stack on a Laravel exhibitor-management system with a 3D engine that draws exhibition stands. The piece of work I’m proudest of there: several people had built the controller layer with no shared standard, and I refactored all of it onto one consistent pattern. After that, even AI coding tools could recognise the pattern and build new features on top of it.
How I work
I care about software that is reliable and easy to understand. Domain-driven design, clean architecture and SOLID principles are tools I use a lot, but the goal stays the same: code that the next person can read, change and trust, without complexity that doesn’t earn its place.
I like to start from fundamentals: what the problem is, and who it’s for. The technology comes after that.
Building my own products
Next to my jobs, I’ve always built things of my own. From 2012 to 2014 I created and sold Joomla extensions to customers around the world through JoomlaJungle. From 2015 I was the main developer of the websites of Alien Army, DJ Skizo and DMC/Killa Combat Italy. As a freelancer I found, pitched, built and launched the website of Casa Nostra Kitchen. Since 2020 I’ve run Lettera al mio io futuro, and I publish free WordPress plugins.
In 2026 I reopened Digital Mastiff, my Dutch business, to build GoPractice: booking and membership software for studios and gyms. I’m the developer, and I’m learning to be the founder and the salesperson too.
Outside work
Music has been with me for a long time: I’m a DJ and scratcher, I took part in scratch battles for several years, and I’m an Avid Certified User for Pro Tools. These days I play a weekly DJ set on Twitch, train boxing and dance salsa.
I drink my coffee in Italian, write code in English, listen to rap in French and binge TV series in Spanish. Dutch is a work in progress: I can follow a Dutch series now, as long as the subtitles stay on.
